In 1959, the population density is 835 persons per hectare (83,500 people / km 2) for the whole island, or 1391 per hectare (139,100 people / km 2) for residential areas, the highest population density ever recorded worldwide. As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in 1960. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974, and today is empty and blank, which is why it is called the devil island. Travel to Hashima have reopened on 22 April, 2009 after more than 20 years.
